What we like about Germantown

Germantown has a unique history, some beautiful scenery, many attractions and plenty of good food. So, whether you’re looking to spend some time outdoors, explore museums or try the best German cuisine around, you’ll find it all in Germantown!

Here are some of our favorite things about Germantown.

History

Germantown wasn’t always the popular suburb of Milwaukee that it is today. At one point, Germantown was just a small community—until it joined with 6 other hamlets (towns) and became the incorporated Village of Germantown.

That’s a little confusing, isn’t it? Well, the town of Germantown was originally one square mile, and it was actually called “Town 9” back in 1836. It served as a small farming community until 1963—that’s when everyone got together.

After the annexation of the towns, the Village of Germantown grew to more than 35 square miles. Today, it sits in Washington County and has a population of about 20,000 people.

Outdoor fun

Germantown isn’t right on the water, but with less than a 30-minute drive to the shores of Lake Michigan, it’s not hard to have some aquatic fun. Just head over to Virmond Park for some incredible views of the lake, or check out a marina near Milwaukee!

There are also a number of parks and outdoor spaces to enjoy that encompass over 400 acres of land. You can even find amenities like athletic fields and courts, an ice-skating rink (depending on the weather), a skatepark and even an archery range.

You better be ready to spend some time outside in Germantown!

To do around town

Want to visit a museum? See a historical site? Catch a show? You’re in the right place!

Check out the Sila Lydia Bast Bell Museum to find a collection of more than 5000 bells from all over the world. Or, visit the Valentine Wolf Haus Museum to step into the life of an 1800s shoemaker.

There are many cultural attractions just outside of Germantown to stop and see, including the Tower Heritage Center, Wisconsin Museum of Art, Cedarburg Art Museum, Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts and much more.

You can also visit the Germantown Performing Arts Center to watch a musical, play or concert performed by students or professionals, or head over to Milwaukee to visit the Marcus Performing Arts Center and experience a Broadway show!

Great Food

After running around Germantown, you might work up an appetite. There are a variety of great dining options to choose from in town and in the surrounding areas.

First things first, you have to try Von Rothenburg Bier Stube (try saying that three times fast). You’ll be transported to Germany—with authentic cuisine, a fun atmosphere, and awesome décor!

Or, check out Ally’s Bistro, for some fresh, quality food and live music, the Hot House Tavern for tasty sandwiches, burgers and fish, or hop in the car for a short drive to Richfield’s newest restaurant, The Stillery.
