What is Drive-Up Storage?

Drive-up storage is what most people think of when they envision a storage facility—low, single-story buildings with metal roll-up doors, surrounded by wide driveways, fences and security cameras.

As the name suggests, drive-up access is a storage option that allows you to drive your car, van or truck right up to the storage unit. These are great options for residential and business customers, and often can be used for vehicle storage.

A drive-up storage unit can be climate controlled but are more commonly not. Some storage facilities offer drive-up storage units that are inside of a storage facility and/or climate-controlled.

No matter what drives your need for storage, we have a unit for you.

Residential Storage

Homeowners and renters are the most frequent storage renters, and drive-up storage offers convenience and protection at a value rate. Often, residential customers are faced with storing several rooms’ worth of belongings in the aftermath of a life event, such as marriage or separation, childbirth, relocation or just decluttering.

Drive-up storage units eliminate the need to store your possessions in a garage or basement, and unloading right at car-side eliminates a lot of extra stress.

Business Storage

With extended hours and easy car-side access, drive-up storage is a popular choice for many businesses facing a deficit of space. Storage represents a cost-effective solution since it’s often cheaper than relocating. Plus, it minimizes the risk of upsetting your employees and/or loyal customer base with a location change.

Professional offices like medical clinics and law firms are required to keep patient and client information for several years after the last contact. Drive-up storage means that you can store these safely offsite and still leave room for your practice to expand rather than be consumed by records.

Merchants can store seasonal items or overflow inventory in storage facilities, and with drive-up storage, all the loading and unloading only takes minutes. E-commerce merchants, artisans and creators can also benefit from drive-up storage for inventory storage.

Contractors often store everything from building materials and replacement parts to tools and equipment. Manufacturers rely on storage facilities as ad hoc warehouse space.

Vehicle Storage

In many facilities offering drive-up access, units can be used for motorcycle storage, car storage, RV storage, even toy and boat storage. The only limitation is typically the height of the unit’s door, which is usually 7 ft. at most locations. If you want to know more about storing specific types of vehicles, read any of our guides, linked below, or call our storage professionals.

Motorcycle Storage

Especially in areas with harsh winters, motorcycles and bikes are considered seasonal means of transportation. If you don’t have access to a garage, self-storage is a must-have. Most motorcycles will fit in 5 ft. by 10 ft. storage units, but if you’ve got a few extra items to store, get a bigger unit!

Car Storage

Drive-up storage units work well for car storage because you can drive right in and, voila, your car is protected from the elements. Most cars will require a 10 ft. by 20 ft. storage unit, although a handful of cars can fit into smaller units (check your car’s dimensions if you’re unsure). Some oversized units can fit multiple vehicles, suitable for collectors or leasing agents. While your car is inside, we recommend a dust cover to keep it pristine while in storage.

RV Storage

Most drive-up storage units are capable of storing a pop-up camper or a small, teardrop-style trailer. A 10 ft. by 15 ft. unit can store smaller models, just make sure you account for the length of the tongue on the trailer. Larger campers and trailers can fit in 10 ft. by 20 or 30 ft. units, but the door height of 7 ft. can be restrictive. Some facilities offer drive-in warehouse-style storage, or units with oversized doors, specifically designed for tall campers, boats or heavy equipment—check with your store manager to confirm availability.

Toys and Boat Storage

Owning a boat or ATV isn’t always easy if you live in an apartment or a home without a garage. Fortunately, drive-up storage can afford you the luxury of owning however many toys you want, without the worry of leaving them outside.

Most side by sides can fit in 10 ft. by 10 ft. units, while paddleboards, jet skis and snowmobiles usually fit in 10 ft. by 15 ft. units. Some kayaks and canoes require 10 ft. by 20 ft. units, and it’s best to have a support system in mind so the hull won’t crack or warp.

Smaller pleasure boats, like bass boats and ski boats, can also fit in select units, but remember to include the length of your trailer (and its tongue) when selecting a size.

Warehouse-style drive-up access, although not as common, can often be used for trailered boats that are taller than 7 ft.

Do I Need a Drive-Up Storage Unit?

A drive-up storage unit is a great option for people who need frequent access to their belongings—daily or weekly. The rapid, convenient access to your items makes a drive-up storage unit perfect for businesses and contractors. Additionally, a drive-up storage unit can save you money if you’re using professional movers because they’ll spend less time loading and unloading your possessions at the facility.

How Much Does Drive-Up Storage Cost?

There are a number of factors that determine rates, including location, unit size and more. Often, a drive-up storage unit will be less than a climate-controlled storage unit, but more expensive than an indoor storage unit. Climate-controlled drive-up units or drive-up units inside a storage facility cost more.

We display our low monthly prices for our facility pages, along with our new customer promotions, so you can be assured of getting a great rate. What’s more, we shop the competition constantly to ensure our rates are among the lowest in town.

What Should I Look for in a Drive-Up Storage Unit?

As with any storage facility, the first thing to look for is security. Store Space facilities are fully fenced and gated, well-lit and surrounded by security cameras.
