Motorcycle Storage at Store Space Self Storage

Motorcycle Storage

The reality of motorcycle ownership is that your bike is probably going to be parked more often than not, so listed below are some of the most popular reasons for renting motorcycle storage. Also detailed in this article are some recommendations on the size of a storage unit to rent, plus the different types of storage options available.

Reasons for Motorcycle Storage

Motorcycles mean a lot of different things to different people. Economy. Camaraderie. Danger. Excitement. Freedom. Wherever you fall on the spectrum of motorcycle ownership, there comes a time for most riders to pop the kickstand and keep the bike on ice for day, a week, a month, or even a whole season or longer.

Here are the top 5 reasons motorcycle enthusiasts rent a storage unit. Many riders keep their storage units year-round to have “storage on-demand,” since there are so many reasons to park the bike throughout the year.

  1. Weather — This is the biggest reason for getting a storage unit. In most parts of the country, there is a time when it’s too cold, too foggy, or even too wet to ride year-round. If you’re in an area where the weather turns sour for a portion of the year, it’s a good idea to have a storage unit on speed dial to keep your cycle out of the elements while parked for an extended period.
  2. Security — If you live in an apartment without dedicated cover or your house lacks adequate garage space, a storage unit serves as a great way to keep your ride safe. Add to that the ability to store your motorcycle gear and some additional household or seasonal goods, and storage makes great sense. All our facilities are fenced and gated (with restricted access), and monitored by 24/7 security cameras, plus you use your own lock on your unit!
  3. Length of Contract — Being in the military, working out of state or abroad, or just enduring a never-ending winter is challenging, especially if you don’t know when you’ll get to ride again. Fortunately, Store Space offers month-to-month contracts, so you can store your bike as long as necessary and rest easy knowing that it’ll be just as you left it.
  4. Opportunity — If you’re always on the lookout for a restoration project, having a storage unit makes it easier to pull the trigger when your next project becomes available.
  5. Affordability — Self storage is an affordable alternative to building a dedicated motorcycle structure on your property or investing in a Garage Condo. Take advantage of new customer move-in promotions and low monthly rates at Store Space so you’ll have more to spend on tires and leathers.

Types of Motorcycle Storage

Most motorcycles are between 75 in. (6 ft. 3 in.) and 105 in. (8 ft. 9 in.) in length, making the 5x10 storage unit the most popular with riders. These are a standard storage unit size and can be found at most storage facilities with drive-up units.

Two small motorcycles or scooters can potentially fit in a 5x10 storage unit, but a 10x10 storage unit is the safer bet, simply to avoid overcrowding and damage. Three-wheelers should be stored in 10x10 units or larger.

  • Drive-up Storage Units — Many storage facilities offer drive-up storage, which are ideal for motorcycles. As the name suggests, drive-up units are ground-level with a roll-up steel door, making access fast and convenient.
  • Climate controlled storageClimate control is a feature offered in some facilities with drive-up storage. These units control humidity and temperature better, adding longevity to your motorcycle’s leather and rubber/plastic parts.
  • Covered motorcycle parking — Some storage facilities offer covered motorcycle parking. This is typically a common-space area, protected by a gated entrance.
  • Outdoor parking — Motorcycles can be stored in gated, outdoor parking spots. As these are exposed to the elements, long-term storage is not recommended. Outdoor storage can also be used for trailers for your motocross bikes, or your enclosed toy haulers, among other applications.

Storage units are great for all types of storage, and many riders keep their helmets and gear in storage, along with other seasonal sports equipment and gadgets, instruments and supplies.
