What we like about Waco

Chip and Joanna have undoubtedly had a major impact on the city of Waco. But there’s more to Waco than just keeping up with the Gaineses.

Waco is the county seat of McLennan County along the Brazos River. The city has historic homes, theaters, art exhibits, parks and even a National Monument. Oh, and just under 140,000 residents call Waco home—that’s a big deal.

Here are some of our favorite things about the heart of Texas:

History

Waco doesn’t shy away from its history—it embraces its past. There are plenty of historic places and educational centers to visit and study in the area.

About 100 miles south of Dallas, Waco was founded in 1849 at the site of a Southern Plain Native American tribe village (known in Spanish as the "Hueco"). Eventually, its economy was heavily reliant on cotton, until the railroad came to town in 1881. Then in 1910, the Alico building was constructed. It is the second oldest skyscraper in Texas and it’s still standing!

One of the worst natural disasters in Waco, and the deadliest Texas tornado since 1900, occurred in 1953. Although the Waco tornado brought death and destruction, residents came together and rebuilt the city. This catastrophe also contributed to the development of a tornado warning system for the whole country.

Waco experienced hardships, but they always came out stronger. Flash forward to the 2010s, there was a sudden rise of tourism due to a certain TV show based in Waco—keep reading to meet the Gaineses!

The Gaineses

Waco, TX existed long before Chip and Joanna Gaines rolled into town, but it hasn’t been the same since. Since their HGTV series “Fixer Upper” first aired in 2013, the economy and tourism industry around town has grown, and the housing scene has overwhelmingly shifted to “Farmhouse-chic.”

Beyond the television series, Chip and Joanna own a number of local businesses including Magnolia Homes, Magnolia Realty, Magnolia Market, Magnolia Seed & Supply and Silos Baking Co.—it’s fair to say they’ve impacted the heart of Texas.

Education

Baylor University was officially established by Baptist pioneers in 1845 in Independence, TX. Today, the Baylor campus covers over 1,000 acres in Waco, and the total enrollment in Fall 2020 was just under 20,000. That’s pretty good for the oldest continually operating university in the state.

Baylor is ranked No. 75 on U.S News and World Report’s list of Best National Universities as well as No. 15 on their First-Year Experiences list. Go Bears!

There are a few other colleges in the area, including McLennan Community College and Texas State Technical College.

Culture and Arts

Did you know, Waco is the birthplace of Dr. Pepper? This soft drink originated in 1885 at Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, TX. So, when you’re in Waco, you must visit the Dr. Pepper Museum.

Waco is home to many more historical places and museums including Earle-Harrison House and Pape Gardens, Earle-Napier-Kinnard House Museum, East Terrace House Museum and McCulloch House Museum. You can also visit the Martin Museum of Art, Mayborn Museum Complex, Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, and Waco Police Museum.

There is even more history to be experienced in the libraries in the area. Check out the Texas Collection, Red Men Museum, Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas, Lee Lockwood Library and Museum and Armstrong Browning Library and Museum.

Sports

Waco isn’t necessarily known for their professional sports—they’re known for the Baylor Bears. The athletics program has won 12 team national championships in the Big 12 era, and numerous individual national championships on top of that.

With the major popularity of the Bears, Waco decided to start a professional basketball team. The Waco Royals are in “The Basketball League” or TBL—so look out for Waco’s new team!

Food

We know you’ll work up an appetite experiencing everything Waco has to offer. But don’t worry, there are delicious restaurants, diners, bakeries and BBQ joints on every corner.

First off, you have to try the Gaineses food while you’re in town. Magnolia Table is a breakfast and lunch spot serving up Jo’s buttermilk biscuits and plenty of pie. You can also stop by the Silo Baking Co., where you can stock up on pastries, cookies and cupcakes.

If you’re looking for some neighborhood BBQ, you’ve got to try Jasper’s BBQ, Guess Family BBQ or order a Gut Pak at Vitek’s BBQ.

Of course, there are a million options besides BBQ—stop in Lula Jane’s for baked goods, Blasian Asian for Cambodian and Asian food, Clay Pot for Vietnamese, or Milo All Day for southern comfort food. Jake’s Texas Tea House is a must-try, it’s a 1940s vintage gas station-themed restaurant.
