What we like about Elon

Elon, NC has a small college town vibe with big city benefits—we call that the best of both worlds. When most people hear the name “Elon” they think of Elon University, but there’s more than that.

With a quaint but vibrant downtown full of shopping and activities, a racetrack nearby, outdoor spaces designed to embrace the scenery and dining options for every palate—Elon has plenty going on. Not to mention, the most convenient and affordable storage solutions.

Here are some of our favorite things about Elon!

History

Flashback to 1881, a train depot was built between two crossroads, one being a railroad track, and the other a dirt road. This point came to be known as “Mill Point,” or “Boon’s Crossing” by locals.

A post office opened in 1888, Elon College opened in 1890, and Mill Point became the town of Elon College. When the college switched its name to Elon University, the town changed to its current name, Elon.

Today, Elon looks quite a bit different. In the late 1800s there were small-town shops and stables; today there are just over 12,000 residents, a vibrant downtown full of boutiques and restaurants, and a top-rated university. Safe to say a lot changes in a few centuries.

Education

The biggest, oldest and most well-known college in the area is Elon University. Not only does this school make Elon a college town, it’s also internationally renown and recognized. Elon University was ranked among the top-100 National Universities by U.S. News and World Report in 2021. The University was also recognized by The Princeton Review and appeared on five of their “Great Lists.”

There are a few other schools in the area, including Alamance Community College, as well as North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and University of North Carolina Greensboro.

Downtown Elon

Whether you’re hungry, need some retail therapy or want to soak up some sunshine, downtown Elon is the place to be.

Thrill your tastebuds with some grub at Root Trackside, or tacos at Tanget Eat + Bar—just make sure to check their website for any menu changes. If you’re feeling pizza, Pandora’s Pies has a variety of options including calzones and Stromboli. (Don’t forget to try the garlic knots—you’ll thank us later!) Stopping by The Fat Frogg is a must because it’s close to downtown, has some great food, and live music!

If you want to explore the shopping scene in downtown Elon, you have to stop in Little Red Barn Lamps and Antiques. From antique furniture to rare china and quilts—you’ll find vintage treasures around every corner. You can also head into Simply Oak Boutique for candles, soaps, accessories and clothing or All That Jas for more boutique finds!

More local fun

Want to see some speed? Ace Speedway has been open since 1956, and it’s the perfect place to watch Late Model Stock Cars, Modifieds, Limited Late Models, Mini Stocks and UCAR divisions race around the track. Stop by on a Friday night for weekly races or check their schedule online for special events.

If you’re eager to get some fresh air, check out one of Elon’s outdoor spaces. Beth Schmidt Park has a variety of walking trails along with beautiful views, and the 3.6 mile Elon-Burlington Greenway offers a space for everyone to get outside and enjoy the scenery. Elon even has a dog park, K-9 Corner, for man’s best friend to run around and play.
