What we Like About Syracuse

While Syracuse has, by and large, moved away from its manufacturing past, the city has turned to health care, higher education and high-tech to bolster its economy in recent years. Combined with the area’s history, art, culture and many things to do, it’s not surprising that Syracuse ranked No. 4 on Forbes’ 2010 list of America's Best Places To Raise A Family, and is a good place to live.

History

French missionaries were first welcomed to the area by the Onondaga Nation in the 17th Century. The name “Syracuse” was eventually chosen in 1820 because the lake and salt springs in the region reminded pioneer John Wilkinson of the Sicilian city of the same name. Salt production and related products were important to early settlers.

After the Civil War, Syracuse shifted from salt-related industries and became home to a number of manufacturing businesses, as well as a number of colleges.

Economy

Despite the decline of manufacturing in the area, the economy has remained viable, shifting focus to higher education, research, and health care. Top employers in the region include State University of New York Upstate Medical University, St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, Syracuse University, Lockheed Martin Corp, Wegmans Food Markets.

Higher Education

Since the region has become known for its research, it only makes sense that Syracuse University is one of the nation’s top research universities, ranking No. 85 on CollegeConsensus.com’s 2021 list, “Best National Research Universities.”

The area is also home to other notable higher education facilities, including State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University, SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry, and Le Moyne College.

Arts and Culture

Syracuse hosts two jazz festivals and a Polish festival each year, as well as Syracuse Shakespeare Festival. Syracuse Opera Company performs approximately three performances per year, and the Syracuse Stage and Red House Arts Center are the places to go for creative, entertaining theater.

Museums range from the Everson Museum of Art to the Erie Canal Museum, as well as multiple other centers featuring science and technology, the Underground Railroad, even masks and puppets.

Dining

Syracuse seems to be a favorite destination of TV food programs, and we can see why! The variety alone makes our mouths water.

Guy Fieri and his show “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” has featured Funk ‘n Waffles, Eva’s European Sweets, Kitty Hoynes, Pastabilities, and Byblos Mediterranean Café, while “Man v. Food” has accepted challenges at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Mother’s Cupboard and Heid’s of Liverpool.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

We know you have questions, so we’ve answered some of the most frequently asked ones below. You can always reach out to any of our locations or Care Center at 833-786-7366 if you have questions not answered here.

Q: How much is a storage unit in Syracuse?

A: Rates vary based on a number of factors, including size, amenities and features at any particular location. At Store Space, we publish our rates and move-in offers right on our facility pages for you to see.

Q: What can fit in a 5x5 storage unit?

A: A 5 ft. by 5 ft. storage unit is about the size of a small closet (or 25 sq. ft.). You can fit more than you’d think in these units—they can be used for a small piece of furniture such as a vertical dresser, sports equipment like golf bags, extra boxes or document storage.

Q: How big is a 5x10 storage unit?

A: Twice the size of our smallest units, a 5 ft. by 10 ft. storage unit is about the size of a walk-in closet (50 sq. ft.). These can be used to store furniture (a bed, dresser and TV should fit, for example), several boxes, decorations or winter gear.

Q: What can I fit in a 10x10 storage unit?

A: Popular with apartment renters, a 10 ft. by 10 ft. storage unit is about half the size of a one-car garage (100 sq. ft.). You’ll have plenty of room to store the contents of one to two bedrooms—including appliances, furniture and boxes.

Is it illegal to live in a storage unit in New York?

A: Yes, it is illegal and is against local housing laws.
