What we Like About Rochester

Resilience

Rochester has been nothing if not resilient.

As one of America’s first “boomtowns,” the city in the Genesee River Valley came to prominence first for its many flour mills, then later as a manufacturing center.

As the population grew to meet the boom, Rochester subsequently gave rise to a number of iconic American brands like Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, Xerox, Gannett (media), Western Union, French's (mustard), Ragú (sauces), Paychex, Wegmans (supermarkets) and many more.

Times have changed and even though some of those businesses have moved on, Rochester has adapted, and the area’s economy has shifted to technology and education in recent years.

Education

With the existence of so many innovative companies throughout its history, Rochester naturally attracted colleges and universities focused on technology and research.

University of Rochester is one of the top research centers in America and was named the 34th-best university in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2021.

One of the top private research universities is also in the Rochester metro area. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). It, too, was named as one of the top National Universities, placing 97th by U.S. News & World Report in 2017.

In 2010, the greater Rochester area ranked 8th-best college town in the U.S. by the American Institute for Economic Research. The study cited multiple factors including the overall academic environment, cost of living and city accessibility, research opportunities and much more.

Including RIT and University of Rochester, there are 22 colleges and universities in and around the Rochester region. These include: SUNY Geneseo, Bryant & Stratton College in Greece and Henrietta, Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, Empire State College's Genesee Valley Learning Center, Monroe Community College, Nazareth College and many more.

Culture & Food

Rochester is home to a number of historical and cultural centers, such as the Rochester City Ballet, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Garth Fagan Dance, the George Eastman Museum, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Rochester Contemporary Art Center, the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House and many more.

There are a number of cultural festivals held in Rochester, including the Rochester International Blues Festival, the Lilac Festival, and the Rochester International Film Festival, just to name a few.

There are multiple professional sports teams in the region, including the Red Wings (baseball), the Americans (hockey), the Rhinos (soccer), the RazorSharks (basketball), the Knighthawks (indoor lacrosse) and Flower City Union (soccer).

Nightlife in town is centered around East and Alex in downtown. It’s home to many nightclubs, lounges, coffee shops, bars, and high-end restaurants. The fun isn’t limited to downtown—there are numerous other hip districts around town, including Southeast (in the Park Avenue neighborhood and University Avenue areas) and South Wedge (close to the University of Rochester), both home to local businesses, cafes, restaurants, bars and nightlife. Rochester is ideally located for some fantastic day trips, usually less than a hour drive.

Speaking of cuisine, while not every restaurant is just some dude’s name, some of the best-known ones are: we’re thinking Bill Gray’s and Tom Wahl’s for burgers, dogs and shakes, or Nick Tahou Hots, home of the original Garbage Plate. Of course, there’s also DiBella’s Old Fashioned Subs, and enough pizza places to please the pickiest palates. There are plenty more food options, so check out the foods Rochester is known for

What’s it add up to?

Great resolve to transform, awesome educational opportunities, lots to do.

Is Rochester a good place to live? We certainly think so. With everything going for it, it’s no surprise that Rochester was No. 3 on Forbes’ 2010 list of America's Best Places To Raise A Family

Whether you’re a recent transplant, have been here for generations, or are just here for the educational opportunities, Store Space cares about Rochesterians.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

We know that you might still have questions, so we’ve answered some of your most frequently asked ones below. Of course, feel free to reach out to any of our locations or our Care Center at 833-786-7366 for answers to questions not covered here.

Q: How much is a storage unit in Rochester NY?

A: With rates starting as low as $18 per month*, Store Space has affordable storage units for Rochester. What’s more, we constantly shop our competitors and publish our rates right on our store pages, as well as our move-in promotions.

Q: What can fit in a 5x5 storage unit?

A: At about 25 sq. ft., a 5x5 storage unit is comparable to a standard closet. As such, these units are ideal for storing one or two smaller pieces of furniture (chairs, a small desk, a dresser), as well as boxes and bins. Hint: These are great for seasonal items like lights, and decorations.

Q: How much can a 5x10 storage unit hold?

A: Approximately 50 sq. ft., a 5x10 storage unit is roughly the size of a walk-in closet. With double the space of the next smallest unit, these are great for the contents of a single room (think a couple of pieces of bedroom furniture, plus a Queen-size mattress), or one or two larger items, like appliances, office furniture, etc. Hint: Place larger items on the bottom and stack items on top to take advantage of the high ceilings in most storage units!

Q: How much fits in a 10x20 storage unit?

A: The 10x20 storage units are 200 sq. ft., which is similar to the footprint of a one-car garage. These can be used to store the contents of a 3- to 4-bedroom home, including appliances. Hint: Shop owners often use these units as inventory space to take advantage of large-volume discounts.
