What we like about Wabash

The city of Wabash is the seat of Wabash County, located in north central Indiana. The area offers residents and visitors a small-town atmosphere with a variety of local events and festivals. Wabash also boasts a low cost of living and is considered a top place to retire in Indiana.

Past to Present

Some of the first Europeans that arrived in Indiana included French explorers and fur traders who set up trading posts along the Wabash River. People used the area for commerce, and eventually, a settlement was constructed. An extension of the Wabash-Erie Canal arrived in 1837 and brought major growth to the area. Wabash was then selected as the county seat in 1835 and formally founded in 1866.

The city was an industrial center during the United States Civil War, home to many manufacturers and factories. In 1880, Dr. Charles Brush chose the city of Wabash to demonstrate electrical lighting as a solution for municipal lighting. (That’s why Wabash is considered one of the first electrically lighted cities in the world.)
