What we like about South Bend

When most people think of South Bend, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the University of Notre Dame. Considering that Notre Dame Stadium seats more than 80,000 football fans and the team receives national TV coverage most weekends, it’s no surprise.  

But South Bend has so much more to offer than just the home of the Fightin’ Irish. (In fact, Notre Dame, Indiana, is its own unincorporated community, home to three college campuses and more than 7,200 residents.) South Bend, the seat of St. Joseph County, lies along the St. Joseph River in northern Indiana. Home to more than 103,000, South Bend is the fourth-largest city in Indiana, as well as the largest city in the South Bend–Mishawaka Statistical Area, with more than 318,000 residents.

Past to Present

The St. Joseph River was the original attraction to settlers in the area, drawing fur traders in the early 19^th Century. By 1865, South Bend was established as a city, and the river continued to aid the local economy as heavy industry benefitted from its proximity to the water.

Probably the best-known industry from the region was the Studebaker Corporation, which was the area’s largest employer until it closed in 1963. When it closed, the area’s population also decreased from its high of more than 132,000.

Also intrinsic to the area’s history is the University of Notre Dame, which was founded in 1842 by French Catholic priest Edward Sorin. It was in the early 20^th Century that the school became known as a research institute, improving its reputation academically and increasing the student population. Around the same time, the school became known for the success of its football team under Knute Rockne.  

While Notre Dame remains one of the area’s top employers (the first is Beacon Health System), there are several companies located in the region, including AM General (heavy vehicle manufacturer), Crowe LLP (accounting), Tire Rack (automotive products) and Holladay Properties (commercial real estate).

Two technology parks have also been created in South Bend to stimulate future job growth. These are Ignition Park, on the former site of the Studebaker Plant, and Innovation Park, across from Notre Dame University.

Education

As you can imagine, the University of Notre Dame dominates the talk of higher education, but it’s not the only college in the area. Notre Dame (the place) is also home to Saint Mary’s College and Holy Cross College, and Indiana University has a South Bend campus, and Bethel University is in nearby Mishawaka.

Families can expect good public schools for their children, with Penn High School and Adams High School both being well-regarded. Meadow’s Edge and Walt Disney elementary schools are among the best serving the region, as is Virgil I Grissom Middle School. 

Things to Do 

As you can expect, Notre Dame is one of the area’s largest tourist attractions, not just on game day, but throughout the year. Approximately 1.8 million Catholic and non-Catholic tourists flocked to the campus during the 2015-16 academic year to see the sites, including the Main Building (the one topped with the gold dome), the 140-plus-year-old Basilica of the Sacred Heart and its stained-glass, the Grotto, the Hesburgh Library with the Word of Life Mural (a.k.a. Touchdown Jesus).

Off of campus, make sure to check out the Potawatomi Zoo, the second-oldest zoo in Indiana, or the Studebaker Museum, which has the largest collection of presidential carriages, and the original 33 cars from the Studebaker Corporation, and military vehicles.

For locals, Potawatomi Park offers a great opportunity to get the kids outside, with a Splash Pad, an exercise track, an accessible playground, a kids' playground, an outdoor performing arts pavilion and much more.

Sports & Recreation

The Fightin’ Irish football team has been the biggest draw in the area since Coach Rockne led Notre Dame to three national championships a century ago. The university is the epicenter of a wide range of sports, and attracts some of the top athletes in 20 men’s and women’s sports, including basketball, lacrosse, hockey, golf and more.  

South Bend is also home to the South Bend Lions Football Club and the South Bend Cubs minor league baseball team.

Recognized as a bike-friendly community, South Bend has developed plans for more than 100 miles of bikeways and routes.

The area also boasts the East Race Waterway, an artificial whitewater canal used for recreational and competitive watersports including canoeing, kayaking and rafting. 

Food 

There is no shortage of restaurants in the South Bend area. LaSalle Grill and Café Navarre are local favorites for upscale American cuisine. Top-rated pubs include Fiddler’s Hearth, Crooked Ewe, and Legends of Notre Dame on campus. Head to The Early Bird Eatery for upscale breakfast (breakfast poutine, anyone?).

Being a college town also means there is always access to good pizza. Rocco’s Restaurant, Blaze Pizza, Lacopo’s Pizzeria and Center Stage Pizza are among the best pie shops in the area.
