What we like about Salem

Salem is a historic city in Washington County, Indiana. The city is located 36 miles north of Louisville, KY, and 102 miles south of Indianapolis. The city shares a name with Salem, MA, and Salem, NC, the latter of which inspired the Indiana city’s name.

Keep reading to discover what our favorite things about Salem are and learn more about Salem’s rich and unique history.

Past to Present

Salem was originally founded in 1814.

One of the first influential events to occur in the city was a stop on Morgan’s Raid. The cavalry raided locations in Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana. Entering Salem on July 10, 1863, John Hunt Morgan took possession of the city and raided and pillaged the city, burning the railroad depot and looting stores, all within six hours.

After Morgan’s raid, Salem was immediately rebuilt and repaired. Over the next 40 years or so, Salem gained a strong reputation as a center for education in Indiana. The town was home to John Milton Hay, the personal secretary of Presidents Lincoln, McKinley and Roosevelt. Lee W. Sinclair, a major constructor and modern visionary who, in 1901, built the West Baden Springs Hotel also lived in Salem.

Today, Salem is a large producer of agricultural products including crops such as soybeans and corn. The town Is surrounded by forests, farmland and some small bodies of water. Since the 2000s, Salem’s population has remained consistently just over 6,000 residents.

Education

While not as robust as its reputation was in the late 1800s, Salem still resides near a modest selection of education opportunities. The leading university within an hour drive of Salem is Indiana University Southeast, which is located in New Albany, Indiana.

Just across the Ohio River from Indiana University Southeast resides the University of Louisville and Bellarmine University. Driving north from Salem, prospective students can find Indiana University in Bloomington and Purdue University further north in West Lafayette.

The public education system in Salem is rated quite high, with Salem High School gaining the highest reputation and receiving a “B” grade on Niche.com. Other schools in the area include Bradie M. Shrum Lower Elementary School (B-) and Salem Middle School (C+).

Culture and Arts

Every year, the Salem chamber of commerce and other government groups host several city-wide festivals and events. The most famous event occurs in September when the city celebrates “Old Settler’s Day” at the John Hay Center.

Several buildings throughout Salem’s downtown area are recorded on the National Register of Historic Places. The most famous buildings throughout Salem are the Carnegie Library and the Washington County Courthouse.

Sports

The Salem Speedway is one of Salem’s leading attractions. The historic racetrack has been driven by legendary drivers including Mario Andretti, Jeff Gordon and Darrell Waltrip. One of the first ever auto racing events televised on ESPN was held at the Salem Speedway in 1979.

Aside from local high school sporting events, Salem, Indiana, does not have a large presence of athletic contests. Professional sports teams throughout Indiana include the Indianapolis Colts (NFL), Indiana Pacers (NBA) and the Evansville Otters, a baseball team that competes in the Independent Frontier League.
