Past to Present

Bounded by two wars and surges in local industry, the history of New Albany is one of conflict and progress. 

The United States first received the land of New Albany after the Revolutionary War. The land was captured by George Rogers Clark in 1779. The city of New Albany was founded 34 years later by three brothers from New York. The Scribner Brothers arrived at the Falls of the Ohio River and named the area after their previous home, Albany, New York. The Scribner House still stands in New Albany today.

New Albany saw tremendous growth throughout most of the 19^th century. The city was rooted in the steamboat industry, and the industry produced several notable boats including the Eliza Battle (1852) and the Robert E. Lee (1866), the last steamboat produced in New Albany. The city’s shipbuilding success propelled it to be the wealthiest portion of Indiana before the Civil War.

Once the Civil War started, New Albany became a supply center for Union troops and a medical center for wounded soldiers. To keep up with demand, many of the city’s buildings were converted into makeshift hospitals.

As the Civil War progressed, New Albany was boycotted by both sides. The Confederates boycotted New Albany because Indiana was a Union state. The North boycotted New Albany because the city was friendly to the Confederates. Shortly after the end of the Civil War, the steamboat industry collapsed. However, New Albany continued to experience an industrial boom through the start of the 20^th century, turning instead to railroad repairs and pork packing.

Today, New Albany’s Economy is rooted in healthcare, education, construction and technology industries.

New Albany is home to two main universities: Indiana University Southeast and a satellite campus of Purdue Polytechnic Institute. The city is also home to the Charles Allen Prosser School of Technology, a leading vocational school offering classes in culinary arts, auto-body repair, airplane mechanics and more.

For primary education, New Albany has several grade schools, including five elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. New Albany High School is the oldest public high school in the state of Indiana. Much of New Albany’s culture is rooted in its historic past. The city features a collection of 19th-century mansions, many, including the Culbertson Mansion, are sprawled along Main Street. The Culbertson Mansion is three stories tall and an example of French Second Empire architecture. The structure is an Indiana state memorial. 

One of the leading events that take place in New Albany is the city’s annual Harvest Homecoming Festival. The festival begins the first weekend in October and continues through the second week. The festival features a midway complete with rides, shows and booths. The festival also includes a pumpkin decorating contest, parade, mini tractor pulls, costume contest and Miss Harvest Homecoming pageant.
