Past to Present

In the early 1800s, the present-day area of Loganville was called Buncombe. In 1842, James H. Logan arrived and settled there. He didn’t stay long, but the town was renamed in his honor in 1851.

The first town charter was issued in 1887, and the Loganville and Lawrenceville railroad arrived shortly after. The railroad brought growth to Loganville, but it didn’t last forever. It made its last run amidst the suffering of the Great Depression.

Even though the railroad left Loganville, it has experienced steady population growth for the last few decades, increasing from about 5,400 residents in 2000 to more than 14,000 in 2020.

Education

The city is served by both Gwinnett County Public Schools and Walton County Schools, and offers a number of highly rated education centers.

Located in nearby Athens, the University of Georgia is one of the oldest universities in the state and was chartered in 1785. The university currently offers programs in 18 schools and colleges, and has been ranked in the top 20 for best public universities for six years in a row.

Loganville is also nearby Gwinnett Technical College and Athens Technical College.  

Parks and Recreation
