What we like about Albany

When you hear “Albany,” chances are you think of the capital of New York State. But we’re talking about Albany, Georgia.

Sitting on the Flint River, Albany has beautiful waterfront views, fascinating history, endless entertainment, and even one of Georgia’s seven natural wonders. That's part of why we consider Albany, GA a great place to live

Here are some of our favorite things about Albany!

Background

Albany was first inhabited by Creek Indians who called the area “Thronateeska,” meaning “the place where flint is picked up.” The river which flows through Albany was eventually named the Flint River.

Nelson Tift then founded the city of Albany in 1836, and guess what he named the city after? Albany, New York—he was hoping the town would prosper just like the capital of New York state.

Railroads came to Albany in the early 1900s, and eventually, seven railroads passed through the city’s Union Station. This station is now standing as a historical center.

Albany has changed a lot in almost 200 years. But, it has also embraced its past by preserving historical sites and creating museums for everyone to experience.

Flint River

Albany sits on the bank of the Flint River, a very precious natural resource of Southwest Georgia. It covers 220 undammed miles, making it one of 40 rivers in the U.S. that flow unimpeded more than 200 miles. It’s also one of the most ecologically diverse river basins in the Southeast.

Why is the Flint River so important? Easy question: it has had a major influence on the city of Albany. Currently, the city is redeveloping the downtown area to highlight the Flint River. The views are also stunning, just visit the Riverfront Park and Riverfront Trail to see for yourself.

One of the most popular attractions in all of Albany is the Flint RiverQuarium. It is a 175,000 gallon, 22-foot deep Blue Hole Spring with more than 120 sea creatures and interactive exhibits including an alligator kingdom and even an aviary.

Historical Sites and Culture

Explore Albany’s rich history and visit Ray Charles Plaza. You can hear the songs of musical icon Ray Charles, a.k.a. the Genius, and watch as a life-size sculpture rotates to the music.

The Thronateeska Heritage Center is on the only brick street left in Albany, and it includes the Science Museum, Wetherbee Planetarium and History Museum. You can also check out the Civil Rights institute or Albany Museum of Art for more unique experiences in Albany.

What Else to Do in Albany

If you’re looking for a little adventure, Albany doesn’t disappoint.

Albany is home to one of Georgia’s seven natural wonders. Radium Springs Gardens has an underground cave that pumps 70,000 gallons of water per minute. While exploring the park, you’ll see amazing crystal-clear water views and plenty of plant life.

The Chehaw Park and Zoo is also a must-see. Find a variety of exotic and local animals, including alligators, birds, cheetahs and even some insects. With exhibits, animal feedings, and keeper talks, you get an up-close and personal experience with these creatures.

Food

Everyone has to eat, right? So why not enjoy some of the best dining in Albany. Whether you’re looking for some fresh seafood, southern soul cuisine, Mexican or even Jamaican, you can find some great grub in Albany.

If you’re in the mood for some seafood, you’re in the right place. Stop in The Catch and eat some crab cakes with the locals or visit Albany Fish Company for some po boys, fried oysters, or catfish.
