From humble beginnings as the first Swedish settlement in the U.S. to becoming the self-proclaimed corporate capital of the world, Wilmington has definitely had a unique journey. It’s the largest city in Delaware with 70,000 residents and is part of the Delaware Valley, which includes the Greater Philadelphia metro and encompasses portions of four states (Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland).

The city consists of many neighborhoods, both distinctive and historic in their own right. There are nine historic districts in Wilmington, including Quaker Hill (founded by, you guessed it, Quakers, in the early 18^th century), Old Swedes Church and more.  

Here are some of the things you need to know about the city that sits at the confluence of Brandywine Creek and Christina River. 

Past to Present

The region was first home to the Lenape people, who farmed, hunted and fished, and later traded pelts with the area’s first settlers. By the early 17^th century, Swedish ships landed in the area, hoping to establish a colony in North America. Fort Christina was built in 1638 as the first Swedish settlement. The Dutch were also interested in the area and, after several battles, took control in 1655. Dutch control lasted almost a decade until the English took control of the region in 1664.

The British colonized the area and named it Wilmington in 1739. British troops remained in the area until 1778. After the Revolutionary War, Éleuthère Irénée du Pont emigrate from France and set up a gunpowder manufacturing mill nearby. His company, DuPont, became a major military supplier and the area during the Civil War, as it also became a hub for shipbuilding and other goods.

The area once again prospered during the first and second world wars, peaking at a population of over 120,000 in the 1940s. After World War II, a decline in jobs and increased suburbanization led to a steep drop in population. It wasn’t until the 1980s when state laws changed and banks began moving into the area that Wilmington became a major banking headquarters for the world, with many top brands based within the city.

The city was once known for its high crime rate and while it’s been improving in recent years, it’s still rated D+ on CrimeGrades.org. Areas nearest downtown and the riverfront are considered the highest crime areas.

Education

As part of four-state Delaware Valley, there are many colleges and universities relatively close to Wilmington. Wilmington University is just south of town in New Castle. Delaware State University has a Wilmington Campus, as do the University of Delaware and Springfield College. Eton University and for-profit Strayer University, plus several smaller schools and technical colleges, are nearby, as well as the home of Provident University, a prominent online school.

Philadelphia, about 30 miles to the northeast, is home to about 55 universities and colleges, including 46 private, two public, and several community colleges.

Primary education in the area includes several highly rated charter schools, including the Charter School of Wilmington and the Newark Charter School, plus Cab Calloway School of the Arts and Conrad Schools of Science.  

Culture and Arts 

The city has many ethnic festivals in spring and summer months, celebrating the diversity of the city’s population, including Italian, Greek and Polish. Haneef's African Festival and Big August Quarterly are two of the main festivals celebrating the city’s African American majority.

The Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, the People’s Festival (a tribute to Bob Marley, who once lived in Wilmington), and the Riverfront Blues Festival are the area’s top music festivals.

Sports & Recreation

Some of the NBA’s up-and-coming stars can be seen competing for the Delaware Blue Coats in the G League at Chase Fieldhouse. The Wilmington Blue Rocks, five-time minor league baseball champions, play at Frawley Stadium. The Delaware Black Foxes play rugby at Eden Park, while the Bearfight FC of Wilmington is a USASA soccer team.

Run by the state, Wilmington State Parks are Brandywine Park, including the Brandywine Zoo, Alapocas Woods Natural Area, H. Fletcher Brown Park, and Rockford Park. The city operates 55 parks and rec facilities in the area. 

Runners can choose between a number of long races throughout the year, including 15K Delaware Distance Classic, the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon, and the Run for the Buds 1/2 Marathon, 1/2 Marathon Relay, and 5K Run/Walk.

Professional cyclists gather for the Wilmington Grand Prix, a time trial, criterium races, a community ride and a distance event held annually in May. 

Food 

Foodies flock to La Fia bistro on Market Street for seasonal and sustainable meals, from small plates to pastas and entrees. Seafood also takes center stage in Wilmington, with Big Fish Grill, Harry’s Savoy Grill and Feby’s Fishery among the highest regarded.
