What we like about Hartford

Hartford has been home to some exceptional people—Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Katharine Hepburn, and even the fictional characters Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. So, it makes sense that Hartford is extraordinary on its own.

Here are some of our favorite things about Hartford.

History

Hartford was settled in 1635 by a group from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It is one of the oldest cities in the state and is the capital of Connecticut.

Here’s a fun fact: Connecticut’s nickname is the Constitution State—and Hartford is why. The town required its own governing authority, so John Hooker and others who settled in the area created the Fundamental Orders. This document is described by many as America’s first written constitution.

A lot has happened since 1638. Today, Hartford is home to several large corporations, is nicknamed the Insurance Capital of the World, has over 120,000 residents, and is the 4th largest city in Connecticut.

Even though the city has grown leaps and bounds in the past few centuries, Hartford still embraces its past. There are plenty of historic places and museums for others to experience the city’s history. (More on that later.)

Education

There are a few colleges and universities in the Hartford area, but the most well-known are the University of Hartford and Trinity College.

University of Hartford is recognized as one of the most diverse colleges in Connecticut. It’s also ranked as a top undergraduate engineering program by U.S. News and World Report

Trinity College was founded in 1823, and nearly 200 years later is still thriving. U.S. News and World Report ranked Trinity College in the top 50 on their list of National Liberal Arts Colleges Rankings

The other schools in the area include Capital Community College, Central Connecticut State University, University of Saint Joseph and Goodwin University.

History and arts

You can’t help but be amazed by the history and arts in Hartford. Stop by the Museum of Connecticut History, the Connecticut Historical Society, or the Old State House to find exhibits specific to the state of Connecticut.

Or, visit the Mark Twain House and Museum and Harriet Beecher Stowe Center to step into the past and experience the lives of these important figures.

Hartford is also home to the oldest continuously operating public art museum in the United States—The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. It opened in 1844, and currently has a collection of almost 50,000 works of art.

You can also visit the Connecticut Science Center for a day of fun and learning, or one of the many art galleries or even live arts experiences in the area.

Sports

After you catch some history, catch some action at one of Hartford’s sporting events! Check out the athletics in the area including Hartford Athletic (United Soccer League) at Dillion Stadium, The Hartford Yard Goats (MiLB Eastern League) at Dunkin Donuts Park, or the New Britain Bees (FCBL).

The University of Hartford athletics program has earned some recognition. Even though it is in the process of transitioning from Division I to Division III, a number of Hartford Hawks have moved on to play professional sports—including the MLB, NBA, PGA and NLL. So be sure to go watch one of these games while you’re in town!

Just a half-hour away in Storrs is the University of Connecticut. The Huskies have won National Championships in many of their sports including men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, and soccer. So, stop by for a game!

Food

With everything from quick eats to fine dining, Italian to Japanese and cannolis to steak—even the pickiest of eaters will find something to munch on in Hartford.

Stop in and try Bear’s Smokehouse for some award-winning barbecue in Hartford, and the official BBQ of the UConn Huskies. Check out Black-Eyed Sally’s tasty southern food—a local favorite, or Salute for some Italian cuisine.

If you’re in the mood for a fine dining experience, head over to Feng Chophouse for high-quality steak and sushi, Max Downtown—a chophouse and whiskey bar, or Trumbull Kitchen—a hip restaurant also owned by Max Restaurant Group.

When you can’t fight off your sweet tooth any longer, you have to stop at Mozzicato – De Pasquale’s Bakery and Pastry Shop for some cannolis. Or, for a morning treat, check out Tastease for colorful, scrumptious mini donuts.
